Rockin’ Dog makes good

Rockin’ Dog turned film critic Cole SmitheyRockin’ Dogs drummer turned celebrated New York film critic Cole Smithey gives some love to his old posse in this Q&A with online movie powerhouse Rotten Tomatoes: “A lifelong artsy kid, he bounced around the entertainment industry pursuing varied interests for years: playing drums for the Rockin’ Dogs in San Diego; working as an actor in San Francisco; temping for a studio in New York City. In 1997 he began his career as a professional critic covering films great and small, and he hasn’t looked back since.” (Well, only occasionally, and we hope with fondness.)

  1. Now that Cole has all these movie industry connections, he should get someone to make a documentary about our scene. We can all reunite in San Diego to film it.

  2. DeNiro could probably do a pretty good Terry Marine, and oddly enough James Woods would play a pretty decent Jim Wood.

  3. I’d cast Toby McGuire as Dean Curtis, Christina Ricci as Wendy Gibler, and definitely Hugh Laurie as Steve Garris.

    Anyone got any other ideas?
This would make a brilliant thread on its own! How ’bout it, Matt?

  4. I firmly believe this whole endeavor succeeds or fails on who we cast as Dave Rinck.

Oh! And how about we cast six different actors as Steve Garris? It’ll be like that Dylan movie, or maybe more like Bunuel’s “Obscure Object of Desire.”

  5. Oh man. I’d be stoked if Giovanni Ribisi would play me (though he is nothing like me- I just like the guy’s efforts onscreen.). I actually think Brad Pitt in Snatch had the chaos and uncontrollability down, but he kept winning fights and being cool- two things that rarely happened with me historically.

With my luck I’d probably get Tom Hanks with a faux Hawk, if I were even to get into the script.

  6. Eric Rife is a San Diego photographer who’s working on a documentary of San Diego music. His call for archival materials was one of the catalysts that brought us all together here — thank you, Eric!

  8. Or perhaps he would play me in whiteface and we’d do one of those crazy “mirror” scenes like Lucille Ball and Harpo Marx? We could do a wicked duet of “Stanky Pickel” on harmonica in this style and bring down the house!…ahhh I’m beginning to feel this project…

    heheheheheheh

  9. Jeezus! What a trip to come across all these old names again.

If Depp were to play Jerry, you’d have to get Wynona Ryder to play Cindy Vitalich.

  10. Garris-Peter O’Toole (Recently)
    Sam Wilson-Christopher Glover (River’s Edge)
    Dave Ellison-William Shatner (Star Trek)
    Cole-Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore)
Dave Rinck-Jim Varney (Ernst) OK so casting isn’t my thing.

BTW go see “Religulous” I worked on it.
