Holiday cheer from Sweeney Todd’s

martin,-kay---AWallflowers guitarist turned demon barber Todd Lahman encourages Che Underground: The Blog to spread the holiday cheer with this invitation to raise a glass at Sweeney Todd’s Barber Shop on Hollywood Blvd.

I’ve been looking for an opportunity to recognize Sweeney Todd’s, the ultra-cool shop founded in 1927 and refurbished by Mr. Lahman. By all accounts, he’s parlayed his rock-‘n’-roll sensibilities into a world-class shrine to the classic tonsorial arts.  (Anyone up for joining me in a haircut before the Jan. 30 show at the Casbah?)

Like the invite says, the holiday fun runs 6-11pm Saturday, Dec. 5, at Sweeney Todd’s Barber Shop, 4639 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, Calif. 90027. Tell Todd Che Underground sent you!

  1. Reasons I’ve been anxious to do a Sweeney Todd’s post:

    1. I love to see old friends do cool new things.

    2. Anyone who puts his/her heart and skill into a project and sees it to completion has my attention and support.

    3. This place just looks so damn cool!

Is anybody else working on non-musical endeavors that we should note? (Sweeney Todd’s appears to feature an outstanding soundtrack, so “non-musical” is not exactly accurate. But y’know what I mean, I hope.) 🙂

  2. There’s nothing quite like a shave that includes a skilled barber, an extremely hot towel, and a insanely sharp straight razor. It’s like a massage and an extended monastic experience at the same time. Todd’s place is so refreshing because of it’s unpretentious yet transportational feel. It’s hard to describe, just go….mofos….

  3. Not long after moving to L.A. I was walking down the street on my lunch break and ran into Todd, who told me he was on his way to take his exam for his barber’s license. Now he’s got a great shop of his own. He really made the place over too, it looks awesome.

Todd, I’m looking forward to the party on Sat.!

  4. I remember that day well.Actually I had just finished the exam and was waiting to get my test results. I was a nervous wreck! I was wringing my hands like I was waiting to go to the electric chair when up walks Dave E. I must have been a sight to see.
Here’s one of the guys from my Poway days, a long time ago, and here he is standing right in front of me, of all places and of all days. Dave you were a sight for sore eyes! After I got my results I practically skipped down Wilshire Blvd.to the HMS Bounty and proceeded to drink myself under the table.Dave I hope you come so we can raise a glass together. It would symbolic of that very day.
