The long and winding road

Thanks to my day job, I’m currently on a whirlwind tour of bookstores across the country: from New York to points south, through Texas, up California and ending up in Chicago. I’m riding trains, I’m taking planes, I’m doing interviews and grabbing naps where I can find them. The next week or so should be a blur (and I’m hoping to see many of you along the route)!

But it also reminds me that I never actually had the stress and pleasure of touring with a band (besides a few forays to Los Angeles and of course our recent San Diego reunions). It’s a dynamic that’s always fascinated me: how creative types function move in a group from town to town and get up in front of a new audience each night.

Guess who’s “big in Spain”?

The Tell-Tale Hearts: Go East, young men!

We’ve heard some tales from the road thanks to authors such as Ray Brandes and Bart Mendoza, and I’d like to find out more. Who’s got tour stories to share here about wild performances in exotic locales?

  1. The Morlocks played a show in Roseville ” small cowtown ” outside of Sacramento.

We played in their oldtime movie theater in the old fashion downtown.

I remember we stopped at an old fashion outdoor burger place when we got there. We were sticking out like Gene Simmions in full kiss gear at disneyland………..

The girl taking our order, on roller skates I think was fliping out and said her brother would die to meet us.

The kid was way cool and it was a fun time.

Could I say old fashion just once more?

Does your whilwind trip take you to Florida?

Mark: Not this go-’round, but we’re probably going out again.

I saw Robin in Maryland and — trifecta! — caught up with Joe Hughes, Brian Phillips and old San Dieguito pal Joe Drago (on a movie shoot) in Atlanta this evening.

I hope Paul Fehlman makes it out to the Houston thang! None of these visits are nearly long enough, but it’s huge fun for me.

Paul: It was SO good to see you! We gotta get you to play a SD show, sir!! The public demands it.

  4. VERY VERY good to see you as well Matthew. I would love to at least make a San diego show, let alone play.

  5. Stone-cold sober (albeit sleep-deprived), I am hugely impressed both with the energy of the Fairmounts and the club … And so refreshed to see the band and the likes of Doyle, Lane, McMullen, Turman, Brewin, Kopels, Duke, Mays and of course those darn Damians! You are all an oasis of rockin’ goodness. 🙂

  6. Dancin’ on the grill, Lou!!

Thanks to those who made it out to Warwick’s tonight — with Howland, Ward and Suarez in the house, there was an overabundance of bass excellence … And Ms. Kopels and Mr. Piper, too!

  7. Matt! I’m so sorry I missed you. I couldn’t wrangle up a babysitter to go to your signing. I’m glad some of our crew could make it, and that you got a chance to see the Fairmounts. Someday I will see them too. I will. I know it.
