Another artifact from the legendary band’s Jan. 30, 2010, Che Underground showcase at San Diego’s Casbah. This is the second-to-last song in Manual Scan’s 13-song set before being joined by Chris Sullivan and Chris Davies of the Penetrators.
This sequence was culled from Eric Rife’s video and Dave Fleminger’s audio, and features l-r: Dave Fleminger, Kevin Donaker-Ring, Bart Mendoza, Morgan Young and Tim Blankenship.
Manual Scan recently played its last gig for a while at Bar Eleven, so savor this recent footage of a San Diego institution!
Man, you guys are awesome. I didn’t get to catch that much of your set that night, bouncing around catching up w/a bunch of people I hadn’t seen in a long time. I was blown away when I saw you at the Secret Scooter Society’s anniversary show.

Paul: I missed by days being in SD for Scan’s “Last Waltz” moment at Bar Eleven. I was bummed … There seems to be so much going on with our friends in San Diego right now — the night I caught the Fairmounts, I had to miss the Downs Family. … Paul Brewin met us at the Fairmounts event after playing a gig of his own down the street. And I did get to give Mr. Donaker-Ring a hug in front of the Small Bar en route to the hotel.

I’m so torn about Morgan moving to LA. In one sense, it bums me out so much because I feel this is the best version of Scan to hit the stage since the Flem/Brewin days. Maybe ever. (No offense to Dave and Paul, but Tim and Morgan drive the band harder than anyone did in the past. They rock hard, and I know they bring my performance to a higher level.) On the other hand, Morgan more than deserves his shot at fortune and fame. He’s such a great drummer that I can’t truly begrudge him any chance at that. But my selfish side still grumps about it now and then.
