Sign your support for the Che Café

Time is running short for the performance space of our youth. Here’s a note from Susan Wingfield-Ritter, who’s gathering signatures in support of a last-ditch effort.

Dear Friends and Supporters of the C.H.E. Café,

The C.H.E. Café Collective is requesting your support at this critical time. On March 15, 2015, the collective received a letter from the UCSD administration stating that they will now go ahead and post the 5-day notice to vacate (eviction order). They can post it any day now.

The appeal we filed of the eviction lawsuit is still pending a ruling from the appellate court. We need your help to try to convince the administration to not finalize the eviction. We appeal to our friends and supporters at UCSD and in the community to submit a statement of support for the C.H.E. Café.

We hope you will endorse the following points:

  1. You want the C.H.E. Café to continue functioning as it has for the past 35 years–a unique and invaluable asset to the University, representing diversity at its finest and most inclusive;
  2. You want the C.H.E. Café Collective to continue as the operator of the C.H.E. Café as it has for the past 35 years;
  3. You support the “National Register listing” of the C.H.E. Café and the appropriateness of the “historic occupants,” the C.H.E. Café Collective, to continue the site’s historic use.

We have attached to this e-mail a statement in support of the above three points. We would like you to endorse/sign the statement (as an individual or on behalf of your organization).

Write to add your name in support of the Che Café!

As soon as possible, please email us your consent to add your name(s) and how you want the name(s) to appear (with position/title, etc). We will collect the endorsements and present them to the UCSD administration and to the press right away.

In addition, if you, your organization or individuals within your organization would like to create your own personal statements of support that could include personal experiences of the C.H.E. Café as a welcoming, safe and inclusive space for which they are grateful for, we encourage you to do that as well.

But, please, first send us your permission to add your name to the public support statement. Time is very short here. Your help in this regard will long be remembered.

  1. I sent the email. I’m glad there is a group of people putting their time and energy into saving the Che Cafe. I can’t think of another place like it, certainly not in San Diego, where you can see a show that probably doesn’t bring in much money for a few dollars. I loved being able to hang out in the small forest of Eucalyptus trees.
