They were a cool outfit of three tight musicians,” recalls close observer Paul Kaufman. “My recollection was that the set list at the time (mid-late ’82, right?) still had the ‘early’ sound, with trebly, staccato funk rhythms on the guitar and teenage angst in the vocals, i.e. ‘More Songs About Buildings And Food’ was a clearer influence than anything psychedelic.
“That’s why the transition of coming back [from college] mid-’83 was so stark for me: Suddenly it was ‘More Songs About the Gates of Dawn.’ “
