The Ho Hos: “Creeping Vine (Love Is A … )”

Detail: Robert Labbe/Ho Hos fan buttonAnother number from the Ho Hos, the mid-’90s San Francisco group of Che Underground transplants that included me on vocals and guitar; former Morlocks bassist Jeff Lucas; Robert Labbe (ex-3 Guys Called Jesus drummer); and Steve Lam on lead guitar.

“Creeping Vine (Love Is A … )” comes from the same 1993 demo session that generated “Snowball” and was written by Jeff. Getting to sing material penned by Mr. Lucas was always exciting to me, and I am crazy about the way the lead guitar and rhythm section work together on this song.

I also love the way engineer Tardon Lawrence and producer Jason Brownell doubled my vocals post-production; it’s got this “Plastic Ono Band” kind of feel I always dug.

Listen to it now!

Bonus: Here’s a sampling of flyers I created for shows around San Francisco.

  1. “it’s got this “Plastic Ono Band” kind of feel I always dug.”

It really does have that “we survived the tumultuous 60’s, now it’s the 70’s, we’ve moved on from a lot of the early craziness, we’re more mature and polished” kind of feel. Like comparing Goats Head Soup to Aftermath. The timing makes sense too- 1993 marked the ten-year anniversary of many literal and figurative peaks of our own Summer of Love.

  2. I am happy to hear this stuff after a long hibernation. I was a fan, roadie & Manager with the band at this magic time and have long been a champion of this sound. The brilliance is timeless and the honesty still stands up today. I hope others get to experience this sonic force.
    Keep hopping with The HoHos
